Missing Cumberland Man Found Dead In Park

CUMBERLAND, RI — A missing 83-year-old Cumberland man was found dead in a local park, police said.

John "Jack" Thornhill was reported missing Thursday evening, the Cumberland Police Department said in a media release.

Cumberland police officers found Thornhill's body in a small, wooded park at the end of Branch Avenue, according to the release.

"At this time, the death is not being treated as suspicious in nature," the release said.

"Mr. Thornhill was observed on a neighbor's security camera entering the woods yesterday morning at around 7:50 a.m. by himself and did not return," according to the release. "Cumberland police personnel immediately began search efforts with the use of thermal imaging drones and with the support of a Rhode Island State Police K 9 unit."

The search resumed after sunrise Friday and Thornhill's body was found on a path in the woods, according to the release.

"On behalf of the Cumberland Police Department, I offer my condolences t o the family, friends and loved ones of Mr. Thornhill during this most difficult time," Cumberland Police Chief Matthew J. Benson said in the release.

"I'd like to thank those on m y staff who spent hours last evening and into this morning searching for Mr. Thornhill," Benson said. "While not the outcome we hoped for, their collective diligence was certainly commendable so that Mr. Thornhill could be returned to his family."
