EGHS Boys Lacrosse Heads To 3rd Consecutive Division II Finals
A decisive 13-4 semifinal win over Wheeler gives the Avengers the state championship berth Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown.
The Wheeler Warriors kicked off their Division II semifinal lacrosse playoff bid against EG Wednesday with a goal by Clement Titsworth just minutes into the game. That was the only lead the Warriors had, however, as the Avengers answered with four goals of their own in the first quarter and a 13-4 score overall.
The win gives the Avengers a chance at a third-consecutive D II state championship. EG will take on South Kingstown Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Brown University.
Those four goals in the first quarter were two by Colin Bernier and one each by Captain Sam Feinberg and Ryan Trinque. The second quarter continued in the same fashion, kicked off by another Wheeler goal by Titsworthjust, with EG responding quickly with successful points from Colin Waitkun and Captain Matt Cruise. The teams left the field at the half with the Avengers ahead 6-2.

EG’s defense continued to be strong in the second half despite several tough penalty calls. The third quarter saw EG points scored by Bernier, Alex White, Cruise, and Jon Contreras. Wheeler was only able to get one into the Avenger net with a goal by Captain Nick Zigerelli. EG’s deep bench strength saw continued strong offensive and defensive play in the last quarter with goals by Feinberg, Jack Payette and Waitkun. A final Warrier goal by Zigerelli left the team with a 13-4 loss to the Avengers.
In recapping the game, Coach Brian Trapani reflected on the team’s depth, noting Wheeler wasn’t able to shut down the Avenger offense.

“We have a good aggressive defense, but had way too many penalties,” he added.
Trapani said he hoped to improve the team’s shooting given expectations for strong competition from South Kingstown in the championship game. In two previous games against SK this season, EG has prevailed.
“If we play our game, we have a strong chance to win," Trapani said.
The Avengers play the South Kingstown Rebels in the Division II championship game this Sunday, June 2, at 3 p.m. The game will be played on Stevenson Field at Brown University. Directions and a map to the stadium can be found at http://www.brownbears.com/athletics/Parking_Directions/index#.
