Only the heartiest of EG hometown fans came out Wednesday night braving the threat of rain to cheer on the EG Avenger Varsity Lacrosse team to its seventh victory of the season. The Avengers continued their winning season with aggressive play in a non-division game against Providence Country Day ending in a 10-6 win.
As last year’s defending Division II Champion, the team looks to continue on a similar path this season.
“Everyone’s excited to play and our team simply wants to be out on the field," said co-captain Matt Cruise. “We’ve created a family environment and whether it be JV or Varsity, we all get along, we’re all friends, and we’re all brothers.”
The varsity team has started slow over the last few games with momentum building during the second half. "We get ourselves into sticky situations … begin to wake up, open our eyes, and start playing how we’re supposed to and can play," said Cruise. Happily, injuries have not been a major issue so far this season, he said.
Looking forward, Cruise is looking for the team to play their best throughout the game and not just in the second half. “We have the talent and the ability to be a great team … all we need is the execution.”
Cruise believes that their game is 48 minutes of effort and focus. “As long as we play our game, we’ll find success.”
More than halfway through the season, the Avengers currently lead the pack within the South Division II conference with a 7-0 record and an 8-1 record overall. The team’s only loss so far was to non-division rival North Kingstown on April 16, when it fell to the NK Skippers 6-8.
Fans are encouraged to come out in support of the team at Mount Saint Charles this Saturday, where the JV team plays at 11 a.m., followed by varsity play at 1 p.m. The team’s next home stand follows on Tuesday, May 1, when it plays the Lincoln Lions (6 p.m. on Carcieri Field) where the Avengers looks to maintain their Division II South lead.
