Big Wins for Avengers Against Wheeler, PCD & Mt. St. Charles

EG boys lacrosse team advances record to 8-0 in Division II, 8-2 overall

The Avenger boy’s kicked off a big week of lacrosse when they hosted the Wheeler Warriors last Tuesday. They went on to win that game and two others, against Providence Country Day and Mount St. Charles, by week's end.

During the game Tuesday, EG’s offense dominated through the first quarter with goals by Captain Matt Cruise (2), Ryan Trinque (2), Collin Waitkun, and Captain Connor Finn. The Avengers continued with aggressive play through the second quarter with goals by Captain Sam Feinberg, Ben Contreras, Jack Payette, Waitkun (2), Chris Wright, and another by Trinque leaving the score 13-0 at halftime. The Warriors only goal was scored by Augustus Eleftherio early in the fourth quarter. EG came back with additional goals by Colin Bernier (2) and Contreras resulting in a 16-1 win.

The Avengers traveled to Providence Country Day on Thursday to play the Knights, who have two players from East Greenwich – Daniel and Mike Mullaney. Dan Mullaney put the first point of the game on the board, but EG’s offense came on strong in the first half with goals by Bernier (4), Payette, Waitkun (4), Trinque (2), and Cruise. PCD came back just seconds before the end of the second quarter with a goal by Captain Jonathan Anderson, leaving the score 12-2. EG’s defense stayed strong in the second half, keeping the Knights at bay.  The Avengers countered with additional goals by Patrick Norton and Trinque, walking away with a 14-2 win.

The week ended with a Saturday home game against Mount St. Charles. Plagued by penalties, EG’s offense started off slowly with two goals in the first quarter by Trinque. The second quarter proved more productive with goals by Bernier (2), Alex White, and Waitkun offset by one goal from the Mounties leaving the score 6-1 at the half. The Mounties scored twice in the second half, countered by Avenger goals from Cruise, Bernier, Waitkun, and Contreras resulting in a 10-3 Avenger win.

In recapping the game, Coach Brian Trapani said, “We did enough to win, but we were in the penalty box way too much.”

Coach Trapani said despite the team’s positive results so far, they have a lot of work to do. With only five games left in the regular season, EG leads Division II with an 8-0 record, followed closely by South Kingstown at 7-1 and Middletown at 6-2. The Avengers will face both teams in the coming weeks.

The Varsity Avengers travel to Mount Hope in Bristol on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. game.  JV hosts Hendricken at home on Carcieri Field at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
