Don't Pay 'Annual Meeting Disclosure Statement' Fee
A warning for businesses receiving official-looking "Annual Meeting Disclosure Statement" forms and wondering what to do.

As a local attorney practicing in East Greenwich, I get asked a broad range of questions. Recently, a local business client called up to tell me that they received a notice asking them to pay a $125 fee associated with a so-called "Annual Meeting Disclosure Statement," and wondering whether they had to pay it.
After a little digging, I discovered that the R.I. Secretary of State issued a statement that these very formal-looking letters did not originate from their office, nor any other governmental agency.
A takeaway? Please look into any soliciations that you receive asking you to pay money, regardless of how legitimate the solicitation looks!
