FACE IT, I'm Ahead Of The Celebrity Trend When it Comes to Not Wearing Make-Up

Why are female celebrities getting mad props all of a sudden for going "au natural" occasionally when I, along with thousands of other women, have been ahead of the trend for YEARS?

As I was suffering in bed with bronchitis and a migraine caused by the antibiotics I was taking for the bronchitis (but I digress), I was feeling and looking mighty horrendous… Just in time to see a clip of the Today Show that featured celebrities “without their makeup.” Here we go…

Courtney Cox was receiving mad props from some fashion expert Savannah Guthrie was interviewing for going out to Starbucks and being photographed with only a “touch of lip-gloss and blush.”

Demi Lovato tweeted a picture of herself without makeup urging all her 80 billion followers to “be brave” and not wear make-up that particular day. “We all are beautiful.” Thanks Demi.

Christina Aguilera was also being praised for her “bravery” by going to the airport without wearing any facial augmentation. Basically, the whole point of this interview was to feature female celebrities making a statement; they don’t need to be “made up” all the time by golly! They can go out au natural every once in a while and not worry about how they look. Huh. What a concept.

Just wondering… Do these ladies know there are hundreds of thousands of us who do this ALL THE TIME?!?! I hope your sitting down while you’re reading this but there are ladies out there (like my sister) who, are you ready? Don’t even WEAR MAKE-UP! <Gasp> Say it ain’t so!!

How about these two scenarios?

“Mommy, I don’t feel good.”

“Oh yes dear, the thermometer certainly shows that you have a temp and we’re all out of Tylenol. Suck it up until Mommy puts her make-up on so I can go out to CVS and get you some medicine, kay?”

Or, gotta get some last minute ingredients like toilet paper, eggplant, milk and cheese-whiz? Just let me slap on my make-up and I’m good to go! Oh wait, thanks to Christina Aguilera who doesn’t wear make-up on a 12-hour flight to Europe (so bold!) I don’t need to do that anymore. Thanks Christina! How liberating!

I love my make-up. I enjoy wearing pretty shades of eye shadows and trying to make my eyes “POP" (that’s what they say in all the fashion magazines).  I love different color lipsticks even though I chew it all off five minutes after I put it on.  But I, like several other of my girlfriends and women across the country, am not so insecure that we need to put on a whole face of make-up to go put gas in our car, get a prescription at the drug store or go to Wal-Mart.

I have nothing against Courtney Cox. I hear she’s a nice gal. But really? Getting all these accolades for not wearing makeup when she goes to get a Starbucks coffee?

“Well, c’mon Leslie she’s a celebrity, has an image to keep up and is constantly being photographed by paparazzi…” Blah blah blah.

Well what about me? I’m a music teacher! What if one of the many times I’m in Target without makeup buying bathroom products and cleaning supplies, I bump into a student who sees me without my foundation and mascara? I may scare him half to death! I run the risk of frightening off a potential violin or violist even!  Adios to the next Pinchas Zukerman! Oh, but I forget! I’m so silly!  I’m BEAUTIFUL! I’m BRAVE!! How come I’m not being interviewed by Savannah Guthrie? Okay, at least Patrice Woods?

My question is what do people think these celebrities are going to look like? It reminds me of when Kiss finally took off their make-up back in ’83. I did wish Gene Simmons put his make-up back on. I also associate it to the end of a Scooby Doo episode. Fred takes off a celebrity’s make-up and they turn out to be someone else like Strom Thurman or Zsa-Zsa Gabor – “And I would’ve gotten away with it if it weren’t for you meddling kids!”

So chill out “celebrities-without-your-make-up-on.” Welcome to MY world – you’re the average Josephine, the plain and ordinary, the common woman, the everyday gal. Welcome to you being YOU. Just FACE it!!
