Happy Summer? Spring?

Enjoying Mother Nature's cruel sense of humor? Don't worry, there's a way to forget it!

Last week, it was summer. Windows were rolled down, shorts were dragged from the dark depths of closets, and beach music was lovingly inserted into every car stereo.

Homework forgotten, the population of East Greenwich High School descended on Hilltop Creamery, Goddard Park, and in some cases, the beach. For four days, we were euphoric. The thermostat topped 90 degrees, and the cherry yellow daffodils popped up in every garden.

However, mother nature and her cruel sense of humor has left us mystified and sad, with rainy, fifty degree days. Jeans have been begrudgingly dragged from their hiding places, and procrastinated English essays about Ernest Hemingway are being completed, much to out dismay. What season is this, anyways? Spring? Summer? Winter

With ever-changing weather like this, it’s all too common to fall victim to sweaters in 80 degree weather, dresses in the snow, and raincoats on sunny days. This unfortunate, but comical predicament can usually be rectified easily by checking the weather. However, sometimes even Michelle Muscatello doesn’t know what she’s talking about.

For all of this complaining I’m doing, there’s an upside to all of mother nature’s tumultuous decisions. If your dreary day has you down, go see The Hunger Games.

Every once in a while, there’s a movie that you can’t stop replaying in your head for days. Enter, The Hunger Games. I giggled, I sobbed, I cheered, I learned about life. For those of you who have yet to be hit by the craze, The Hunger Games is based on the first book of a series by Suzanne Collins. In this futuristic movie, Katniss, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is forced into a competition to the death, with 23 other young tributes, for the amusement of her tyrannical government. My only suggestion before seeing this phenomenal movie is to read the books, or at least the first one, because the plot will be a little hard to follow, otherwise.

The Hunger Games has it all: suspense, action, adventure, comedy, romance, and the kind of surprises that cause you to jump shrieking into the lap of the person with the misfortune of sitting next to you. My only question is: are you team Gayle, or team Peeta?

“I like people who smile when it’s raining.” — Unknown

“Happy Hunger Games, and may the odds be ever in your favor.” — Effie Trinket, a character in The Hunger Games
