Letters to My Daughters
The Kayla Chronicles is one way I am being intentional about making memories for my daughter to enjoy when she's in my shoes one day.

Well, I’ve decided to start a new little project for Kayla (she’s our youngest at 2 ½ yrs). Actually, when it’s all finished it won’t exactly be little, but it starts out that way, which works out just fine in my busy schedule.
My project is called The Kayla Chronicles. When I looked up the exact definition for chronicles, I found this one:
…a series of small real stories put in order in the correct series of the events; a historical recorded story

Notice how it says “small real stories." I don’t need to write any extensive, eloquent, or philosophical narratives about mothering and childhood. When Kayla does or says something wacky, wise or new, I make a quick note of it and type it up in my saved The Kayla Chronicles Word document. I started this project, in part, because I have a lengthy handwritten journal I kept for three years for my older daughter. Each entry is a letter to her, recounting all the funny, heartwarming and new things she did. It seems like yesterday when she said funny things like “I love my fresh skin,” “I want my birthday back!” and her attempts at using the potty (“I tried with all my might!”). I plan to give it to her when she has her first baby.
What do I have to give Kayla? As most mothers with more than one child can attest, I have very little. With all the best intentions, I purchased a journal for her too, but the entries are intermittent and messily scribbled. It’s been this way for 2 ½ years. Figuring January is a terrific time to begin fresh, I decided to launch the KC Project.

Occasionally, I’ll include excerpts on this blog. I hope you enjoy reading them. Even more than that, if you are a busy mom, aunt, grandmother, or caregiver who wants to capture these precious childhood years, I hope The Kayla Chronicles inspires you to find the method which works best for you to record the years that vanish so quickly before our eyes. Before you know it, you’ll be passing on your very own personalized chronicles to a mother who used to be the baby in your arms.
