Loving a Difficult Adult Child

...from the blog "My Two Cents: Thoughts of a Small Town Therapist".

Veronica lives with her son Alexi.  He's twenty-seven, unemployed, and completely unambitious.  He seems depressed, but refuses help.  To make matters worse, he's verbally abusive to her.  Veronica is afraid to kick him out because she fears he would commit suicide and it would be her fault.  Once in a while, she calls the police, but backs off when it's suggested she press charges.  She loves him very much, but he won't help himself.  The proverbial rock and a hard place.

What does one do if a loved one is ruining the quality of your life?  By doing nothing, you are an enabler; you're stuck for an indeterminate length of time with an unchanging, ugly situation. If you throw him out, you have to live with whatever happens.  You love him, but he's difficult.  You could never live with yourself if something bad happened.  You are stuck.

There's no right answer.  Everyone in similar situations has to decide for themselves whether forcing him out is what's called for, or whether maintaining the status quo and hoping for the best is the way to go.

A hard choice for sure.
