I think I was about 6 when the Twin Towers fell. I was just a little girl. Too little to realize the enormity of the situation. Too little to understand the changes coming my way. I was just a 6-year-old girl in the first grade, learning my vowels from my consonants. I remember the T.V. going on in our family room, the two Really Tall buildings crashing before my eyes. I remember my parents and my teachers trying to explain it to me. I was too little to understand why Very Bad People would fly a plane hurt so many people. Like any 6 year old, I really didn't understand why one man, one group could be filled with such hate. I was too little.
But now I'm older, and I've learned. I learned why Bin Laden did what he did. He wanted to destroy the things America prided itself on: strong economy, strong security, strong government. Twin Towers (economy). Pentagon (security). White House (government). He wanted to show that America was weak.
He was wrong.

Growing up with 9/11 as I did, I've seen how America became stronger through the tragedy. I remember my brother's third grade class singing for the school in honor of the firemen and policemen. I remember for the past ten years, everyone thanking the men who serve our country. I remember how the Concert for New York City was thrown after 9/11, in honor of all everyone who was lost and everyone who helped.
And now, I'm doing my part with the cross country team at the high school. We'll be running posters to the two fire stations, the police station, and the National Guard in order to thank them for all that they do.
