Outdoor Club Goes White Water Rafting

The Outdoor Club at Cole Middle School had plenty of sunshine and water for a great day on the Deerfield River in Massachusetts.

The Outdoor Club went white water rafting on Saturday, May 4th on the Deerfield River in Massachusetts. 22 students and 8 chaperones donned helmets and life jackets as they braved the cold waters and took on class I, II and III rapids. They rafted about 10 miles along the river and played games in quiet areas under the direction of their experienced rafting guides. Debris from Hurricane Irene could be observed on both sides of the river and we were told the river was an additional 10 feet higher during that time.

There are series of three dams that release water into the Deerfield and we were told that the third and highest dam was close to breaking due to rains from Irene. If that dam broke, water would have broken the next two dams and the landscape would have looked much different in Charlemont and Deerfield today.

For the first time in our short history of going white water rafting, a chaperone (Andrey Goretoy) took pictures of the entire trip from start to finish. I created a slideshow using Empressr and added some music to it. Wait for it to load and experience what it is like to raft with the Outdoor Club from Cole!
