Something Needs To Be Done About Morning Drop-Off At Cole!

Last Thursday, while dropping off my two Cole students, the unimaginable almost happened.... A parent who was in a rush, or late to work chose to pass me on the left, while one of my kids was getting out to the car. I jumped out and yelled at this mom, who I happened to know as her daugher used to be in my Girl Scout troop. The mom looked pretty sheepish, came to a quick halt and would not look at me until I got back in my car. Oh, and she was the second car to pass my car while kids were getting out.

While many readers, or parents would say, "Students should not be getting out on the left side of the car," I say, "The drop off rules are pretty simple."

1) Single file and pull all the way to the front of the dropoff area;

2) Do not let students disembark anywhere but in the dropoff area;

3) No passing on the left.

Pretty simple rules, but if you spent a half hour everyday watching the parents drop off at Cole, you would think that most of them can not follow a simple rule, nor do they have any concern for students' safety.

I do not drive my two Cole students in very often for several reasons, but mostly because my taxes pay for the bus that they are supposed to take. I chose to drive them, and some of their friends in this past week because it was so cold!  However, everytime I do drive them in, there are multiple parents breaking the dropoff rules, and many of them are my friends and neighbors.

I am therefore proposing this – that all readers of this blog, when driving their Cole students into school, promise to follow the rules, no matter how late you or your student may be. The safety of our students is more important than yoga class, a tardy notice or, even worse, a student getting hit by a car.

Please forward this to all of your friends who have Cole students, and even to those who will have Cole students next year. Together we can make a difference, show our kids that we too must follow the rules and, bottom line, keep our kids safe!
