Training the Eye: Art Lessons for Children!
EGHS Grad Elizabeth Kerin shares her story as she starts a local art camp for kids!
At what moment does an individual discover his or her life long passion? From my limited years of experience, I would conclude that few people experience that “Aha!” moment or epiphany when instantly their passion becomes apparent. I’m no different.
My mother first enrolled me in For Art’s Sake art camp for preschool children taught by Mrs. Wilks. And I never stopped. I attended art lessons once a week through all my youth, learning slowly about the principles of design and how to manipulate two-dimensional media to portray reality. As “trained my eye,” as Mrs. Wilks would say, my dedication and passion for art grew. Each week, I was challenged and art gradually became an important factor in my life and something in which I prided myself.
My fifteen years of art classes and lessons have bestowed upon me several awards and I have worked as an intern at the Newport Art Museum and under a Rhode Island School of Design professor to further my artistic pursuits. Currently, I attend the University of Dallas, where I will be entering my sophomore year majoring in art.

Entering the eighth grade Mrs. Wilks invited me to become an assistant for teaching the younger classes and by late high school I began serving as a substitute teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work with young children as they pursued their art endeavors, just as I had at their age. I continued this love for teaching during the summer when I led art camps at Clayground in 2010. During the summer For the same reason, when Mrs. Wilks offered for me to teach camps this summer, I saw it as a full circle for my own art education as well as an opportunity to continue teaching children. While attending college, I have missed teaching and am looking forward to coming back to For Art’s Sake, the home of my first art classes, and lead my own art camp. It is a true full circle ending.
Art lessons and instruction help with the development of fine motor skills, cognitive abilities, perception, and critical thinking. They teach a young person to open their eyes to the world around them and see all that is going on. Besides that, they are just plain fun and allow a child to grow, explore and create. If your child is restless and craves structured activity, art camp will provide him or her with a fun yet structured environment. If you find your child complaining of being bored during the long, lazy days of summer, art camp could be the perfect fit. It is certainly worth the shot; who knows if you will inspire and propel your child to be a lifelong creator, painter, or sculptor?
