Why I Am Running For School Committee

About my candidacy for EG School Committee

This is my first post on EG Patch. My name is Eugene Quinn and I am running for school committee in East Greenwich. I'm hoping this blog will stimulate discussion on the issues surrounding public education not only in East Greenwich, but in Rhode Island and the rest of the country, whether I am elected or not. I am a strong believer in public education and want the current generation of students to have the same opportunities that it afforded me.

By way of introduction, my wife Sheila and I moved to an appartment on Spring Street after we were married in 1976. Sheila was working as a special education classroom teacher at the Trudeau Center, and I was working as a biostatistician at the EPA lab in Narragansett, so we split the distance. Several jobs later for both of us, we are still here. Sheila is currently chair of the psychology department at Salve Regina University, and I am an assistant professor of mathematics at Stonehill College (for more information see my campaign website).

East Greenwich is fortunate to have an excellent public school system, and it is important that we preserve it. Students who entered the system this fall will graduate in 2024, so a very long-term planning approach is required to produce a consistent, high-quality educational experience. Public education will face many challenges during this time. If elected, I will work with the administration and the members of the committee to help meet them (for more information, see my issues page).
