Competition Fierce At Annual Lifeguard Games
Wednesday evening at Misquamicut State Beach saw fierce competition that carried on well after dark. Illuminated by glow sticks, sand flew at the evening's beach flags events.
The week-long continued on Wednesday evening at Misquamicut State Beach, with a musical chairs-style elimination sprint for glow sticks event called “beach flags”. Earlier in the evening were events Queen and King Neptune, an all-around menacing trifecta of grueling sequential sprint lengths of swim-paddle-row.
Competition was fierce on Wednesday, as margins between 1st and 2nd places in each event was undoubtedly narrow. Narragansett Town Beach swept the Queen and King Neptune, with Chiara Spinazzola taking the title for the women, and Kevin Donahue for the men. Westerly Town Beach nipped at Narragansett's heels on both sides with lifeguard Leah DelGiudice taking 2nd in the Queen and Jay Wegimont doing the same for the Westerly men in the King.
Sand flew as darkness fell over the water in the beach flags events, and in the women’s Katie Mangano took 1st place for Westerly Town Beach after a long battle. East Matunuck State Beach's Dave Haley stepped in to take 1st for the men, with John DiGangi of Westerly Town Beach following only inches behind in the final deciding sprint.
