Council Approves $100 Fine For Dogs On Carcieri Field

The ordinance comes after several complaints about possible damage to the $6 million turf field.


Asked and answered. Concerned about their $6 million turf field, the School Committee asked the Town Council to levy a fine on anyone who lets their dog into Carcieri Field. And Monday night the Town Council passed an ordinance outlawing dogs from the field and levying a $100 fine on anyone caught doing so.

The vote passed 4-0.

The issue originally came up at a School Committee meeting July 17, when resident . Committeeman Jack Sommer agreed.

"It could cause damage and could invalidate the warranty," Sommer said. The turf is actually like a giant carpet that sits on top of the ground.

Police Chief Tom Coyle said after the meeting his department is ready to enforce the new law.

"We get a lot of calls right now for animals on the field," he said. "I anticipate this $100 fine will be a deterrent."

Said Council President Michael Isaacs, "It’s a serious problem and it’s damaging to the field, a $6 million investment."

Adopted as an emergency ordinance, the $100 fine went into affect immediately.
