East Greenwich Cruises Over SK In Girls Tennis, 7-0
The Avengers have only dropped one game in five matches so far this season
East Greenwich beat South Kingstown in Girls Tennis Monday at home by a score of 7-0, improving their record to 5-0.
EGHS sophomore Aleksandra Drljaca, in number one singles, easily defeated Alexa Pagliaro, 6-0, 6-0. .
“It’s tough to find anybody that’s going to match her ability,” said EGHS Coach Marc Brocato.
It took longer for Heather Shen at second singles, but the sophomore came out on top over SK’s Cassie Collinson, 6-2, 6-1. Elizabeth Blessing defeated Jackie Miech, 6-0, 6-0, in the third singles spot. And it was Kerri Whelan over Gillian Madden, 6-0, 6-0, in fourth singles.
In doubles play, EG’s first doubles team of Karleigh Caramagno and Haruku Shimitzu bested SK’s Emily Boardman and Annie Madden, 6-0, 6-3. Emily Rapoza and Julia Waicberg in second singles beat Taylor Lynch and Meghan Blessing, 6-2, 6-0.
Rounding out the win for EG was third doubles team Alexandra Fugere and Veronica Comito over Ankeeta Mohapatra and Sam Rendine, 6-4, 6-2.
The lopsided scores don’t tell the whole story, said SK Coach Marylou Morissette.
“The kids played extremely well,” she said. “They were out there for two hours. They made them work,” she said. “This is the toughest match, no question,” said Morissette.
South Kingstown is now 3-3 on the season. Morissette said she's aiming for the playoffs and that she's hopeful that losses to Portsmouth and Middletown - both 3-4 defeats - can be turned around when they meet again in October.
With the qualifying round of the state tournament coming up this weekend, EG’s Brocato is hopeful that all his teams will advance to the main draw. There, players would find some tough competition but, he said, that would be good practice for the team, which hopes to make it back to the finals again this year - only this time coming out state champs.
EG faces Narragansett Tuesday afternoon and Westerly on Thursday, both away games. SK travels to Chariho on Tuesday, and meets Coventry at home on Wednesday.
