East Greenwich Little League Juniors Win District 3 Championship

The 13/14-year-old juniors advance to the state championship tournament.

A week after the town's 11/12 year old girl's , the 13/14 year old boys captured their own district 3 championship after defeating Chariho 8-4.

"[The district championship] was our goal," said coach Bill Dean on his team's victory.

After East Greenwich left the bases loaded in the top of the first inning and Chariho came back and scored 2 quick runs, East Greenwich knew that their "goal" was not going to come easy.

Despite Chariho's early two runs, pitcher Dan Montenegro didn't get flustered and prevented Chariho from scoring another run until the fifth inning.

"He progressively got better," said Dean. "He got into a groove and he did great."

The EG offense ignited in the third inning, when they scored 6 runs.

With two outs, catcher Peter Goretoy started the rally by doubling and then later scoring EG's first run on Montenegro's RBI single. 

After both Sam Allkins' and Joe Gasbarro's RBI singles, East Greenwich took control of the lead and didn't look back. The game was broken open after Tim Warner hit a base-clearing double to give East Greenwich the 6-2 lead at the end of the half inning.

"That was a huge rally. That was the turning point in the game," Dean said of Warner's timely hitting.

East Greenwich came back swinging in the fourth inning and added one run on another Montenegro RBI single.

After Chariho finally got to Montenegro and scored a run of their own in the fifth inning, EG responded with an another run as a result of Max Moss' RBI single.

Chariho would score a run in the last inning off of relief pitcher Ross Dean. It was to no avail, however, giving East Greenwich an 8-4 victory and the District 3 title. 

East Greenwich now advances to the state championship tournament which will begin on the July 23. Check back for details as they become available.
