East Greenwich Man Charged with DUI for NK Crash

Police said the 23-year-old crashed his car while drunk and might have struck an unknown white vehicle somewhere else.

A 23-year-old East Greenwich man who allegedly crashed his car and ended up in the woods in North Kingstown early Thursday morning is facing driving under the influence charges.

Police said Cameron Paul Giles, of 95 Partridge Run, drove into the woods next to the ramp onto Tower Hill Road south from Route 138 west.

Police said the report of a black sedan in the woods came in at around 1:31 a.m. and officers arrived to find Giles as he stumbled out of his damaged 2008 Toyota Avalon.

According to a police report, Giles approached the officer and said that he crashed because he swerved to avoid a deer and was driving about 50 mph while entering the off ramp. He claimed that he had crashed 30 minutes ago and was waiting for a tow from AAA.

Giles told police that he was heading home after dropping a friend off in South Kingstown, but later said he had left a work event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, went to Newport and was driving home. He said he drank between two and five beers while at the event.

Giles failed a field sobriety test, police said, and was arrested for driving under the influence.

Police noted that the car suffered heavy front end damage. The rear windshield was broken and the front passenger side quarter panel seemed to have fresh white paint transfer and a large dent.

Giles struck two yellow arrow highway signs before coming to a rest in the woods, police said, so the white paint transfer suggested that he might have struck another vehicle while on the road before the crash.

Giles said he had no idea how the paint got onto his vehicle, police said.

Police sent a BOLO (be on the lookout) for a report of damage that might be consistent with the paint transfer.

Police said they also found a small amount of marijuana in his pocket and he did not possess a medical marijuana card.

Giles was arraigned before a justice of the peace and released on personal recognizance with a future court date. All told, he is facing charges of driving under the influence, first offense; refusing a chemical test, driving with a suspended license and he was cited for speeding, a laned roadway violation, failing to report damage to a highway fixture and marijuana possession.
