EG Ties Barrington 1-1 In Hard Fought Field Hockey Game
In other Avenger home action, the Girls Soccer team beat Cranston West, 2-1, and Unified Volleyball also overcame Cranston West, 3-0
East Greenwich may not have beaten Barrington, but a 1-1 tie felt pretty good for the Avengers Wednesday afternoon at Nick Carcieri Field.
“We were pleased with the tie because we have lost to Barrington for years now,” said sophomore Caroline Neupauer, who scored the tying goal with seven minutes left in the game. “Words can’t describe how excited I was when I scored that tying goal.”
Neupauer got the goal on a cross from fellow sophmore Jamie Fugere off a corner pass from Liz Colavita.
“Caroline had an amazing performance playing one of the top players in the state from Barrington in Taylor Rideout,” said Coach Deb McMullen. “The game was encouraging ... as a benchmark to see where this team is midway through the season - Barrington is definitely one of the best teams and today we proved we can play with them.”
Mary Coogan, a sophomore, scored for Barrington just shy of 13 minutes into the first half on an assist by Rideout, a senior.
“It was a very well-played game,” said Eagles coach Lee Markowski. “I think my kids played well, and East Greenwich played well.” Still, she said, “I’m disappointed we had the lead and and weren’t able to keep it.”
Markowski credited junior co-captian Kelly Dolan with providing the team’s offensive spark, noting “her quickness and explosiveness on the line.”
She said that EG’s defense did a good job containing her.
McMullen said that captian Taylor Christie and Elizabeth Colavita, both seniors, spent most of the day double teaming Kellie Dolan (another returning all stater) and were able to keep the ball in the Avengers end. Allie Levellee recorded 7 saves - her season high, McMullen said.
"We knew that the game would be a challenge because we were up against some of the best scorers in the state," said sophomore Keri Pallister.
“Our team played so well together as a whole and we really worked off each other,” said Neupauer.
The tie leaves both EG and Barrington with 5-0-2 records. Moses Brown is Division One’s leader at the moment, with a 6-0-1 record. EG has yet to play Moses Brown - they meet on Tuesday at Moses Brown.
