EGHS Fall Sports Round-Up, Part 2
Field Hockey, Boys Soccer, Boys Volleyball, and Cross Country
Besides the football, tennis, and girls soccer teams, the EGHS field hockey, volleyball, and boys soccer teams also look forward on having strong seasons.
Field Hockey
During the 2010 season, the field hockey team lost only one game in their state championship run. However, despite losing nine seniors, Coach McMullen does not see this season as a rebuilding year.

“This will be a deeper team (than last year’s)” she said, noting that there will be more contributors on this team than there was on last year’s state championship team.
The new depth on this year’s team will be a result of younger players who Coach McMullen confidently said “can step right in.”

Coach McMullen gives credit to her captains Katie Sloat and Taylor Christie, who have been hosting captain’s practices longer than any of the other fall teams.
The field hockey team opens their season up Sept. 7 at home against Warwick Vets.
Girls Volleyball
After losing two-year setter and all around leader McKenzie Rickert last season, volleyball coach Terry Jones didn’t know what to expect from her team coming into this year’s fall tryouts.
However, after a week of tryouts filled with conditioning and drill work, Coach Jones sees a lot of potential in this year’s team: “We have a lot of athletic and promising freshmen as well as athletes that have been in the program for the last few years,” she said.
The girls volleyball team will start their season Sept. 10 in a non-league game against La Salle, however the season will start officially Sept. 12 against Prout.
Boys Soccer
Despite losing 12 seniors including Rob Bialy, who coach Pat McGuirl said was the best player to come through the East Greenwich Soccer program’s history, Coach McGuirl still believes his team will be able to compete in Division 2 this year.
“We’ll surprise some people,” he said “we got kids coming from JV who will be able to play right away.”
The soccer team’s season kicked off Thursday night, with a win against Prout 1-0 in the home opener. A story about that game will be posted on Saturday.
