EGHS Girls Soccer Beat Prout At Home 3-1
It took Prout's tying goal with 15 minutes left on the clock to mobilize the Avengers
The EGHS Girls Soccer team didn’t look ready for a return to the state final during Monday’s home game against Prout - that is until Prout tied the score 1-1 in the final 15 minutes of the game. Karen Lockhart and Megan Greineder went on to score goals, clinching the victory, 3-1.
“I think what we learned was not to panic,” said Lockhart about Prout’s tying goal. “We had 15 minutes left and we finished strong. I give credit to our whole back line. Defense saved our butts a couple of times.”
“We had most of the play,” said coach Scott Douglas afterwards. “We had an awful lot of chances that we didn’t finish, which allowed Prout to stay in the game.”
Prout Coach Ria Carroll said their team had to work hard. “Once we pressured the ball and stepped to the ball, we did better,” she said. “As soon as you give a team like that space, they’re going to capitalize on it.”
Prout scored on a kick by sophomore Marissa Flood.
“The goal that they scored was a beautiful shot on their part,” acknowledged Lockhart. With about 10 minutes to go, Lockhart nearly scored with what looked like a perfect high shot on the goal but it was rebuffed by Prout goalie Katherine Keimig, a junior.
“East Greenwich is a good team, there’s no doubt about that,” said Keimig. “The [Prout] goal lifted us up. We fought hard - that’s what Prout does.”
Avenger Coach Douglas said it was a trying game for one of the team’s big scorers last year, Skylar LeBlanc, a junior.
“Skylar’s not a secret weapon anymore,” said Douglas. “She’s going to have to learn to play differently.” He continued, “We’re lucky to be as deep as we are. We have a very deep bench.”
The Avengers have two more home games this week, against Coventry on Wednesday and North Kingstown on Friday. Prout plays South Kingstown at home on Wednesday and Coventry away on Friday.
