EG's Tim Crandall Recognized by Red Cross for Saving Student's Life

Crandall rushed to provide CPR and used an AED when a 17-year-old student collapsed during volleyball practice.

Anthony Petrone of East Greenwich, along with his family, will always remember Tim Crandall, an East Greenwich High School athletic trainer, for saving his life.

Petrone collapsed during volleyball practice and Crandall rushed to his aid, performing CPR and administering a shock with an automated external defibrillator.

Members of the East Greenwich Fire Department arrived soon after to continue the care, but if it weren’t for Crandalls quick thinking and actions, Petrone might not be alive.

To recognize Crandall’s heroic actions, the Red Cross presented him with a Lifesaving Hero Award at a recent ceremony.

Crandall was one of several award recipients at the Red Cross’ Community of Heroes Rhode Island breakfast held in late October in Providence.

Chosen from a pool of nominees submitted to the Red Cross, Crandall was an obvious choice.

Petrone’s mother, Keelin Petrone, joined the honorees on stage and said thanks, noting that “thank you seems so small.”

Her thanks were directed towards both Crandall and the East Greenwich Fire Department.

American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter Executive Director Paula Montgomery had praise for all the honorees at the event.

“The people and organizations we honored represent the ideals of public service and compassion that are cornerstones of the Red Cross mission. They have come forward in a range of situations to do what is best or what is needed. We wanted to recognize these leaders and to inspire others to recognize that they have the opportunity to change lives every day,” she said.

The Community Heroes of Rhode Island breakfast is hosted each year by the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter to recognize people and organizations that go above and beyond the typical in service to others, exemplifying the Red Cross mission. This year’s breakfast was presented by sponsor Webster Bank.
