Fast Pitch Softball Team Steamrolls Classical

The East Greenwich softball team’s offense erupted yesterday to beat Classical 14-3 in the second round of the Division 2 playoffs.

“We haven’t seen this kind of (offensive) output against a quality pitcher all year like we did today,” commented Coach Robert Petrucci on his team’s run production.

Classical jumped out early and scored 2 quick runs in the top of the first inning off of junior pitcher, Mollie Anderson.

However, East Greenwich bounced back in the bottom half of the inning and answered back with a run as a result of junior, Alex Place’s double and sophomore, Lauren Duvall’s RBI single.

Anderson stifled a powerful Classical offense and limited them to one run for the rest of the game.

“You can’t say enough about her and what she brings to the team,” said Coach Petrucci on Anderson’s performance. “She fields and plays her position better than any other pitcher in Division 2.”

After senior, Danielle Webber’s RBI single in the 2nd inning, the Lady Avengers didn’t look back for the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Anderson led off with a double and later scored on a Lauren Duvall RBI “suicide squeeze,” which gave EG a 3-2 lead. After another Lady Avenger RBI “suicide squeeze” provided this time by senior, Kayla Santos; sophomore Keri Pallister hit a 3-run RBI double and left East Greenwich with a comfortable lead of 7-2 after 3 innings.

In the 4th inning, the Lady Avenger offense exploded for 7 more runs with the help of Kayla Santos’ 2 RBI triple to take a commanding 14-2 lead.

Classical scored 1 run in the top of the 5th inning, but to no avail because the game ended as a result of the “10 run rule,” which was implemented because of East Greenwich’s lead after 4 innings.

“They want this done,” Coach Petrucci said optimistically about his team’s motivation going forward in the playoffs.

The Lady Avengers’ next game will be played at 5:30 Thursday at Rhode Island College.
