EG Field Hockey Team Beats Moses Brown, 3-1

East Greenwich Girls Field Hockey will get a chance to retain its state championship title on Tuesday, after beating Moses Brown 3-1 in the semifinals at Cranston Stadium on Sunday.

EG will face off against Barrington in the championship. The two teams met one other time this season, resulting in a 1-1 tie. Barrington beat Bay View Sunday 1-0 to make it to the championship. .

“The game was fantastic,” said EG Coach Deb McMullen. “It was just a well-played, pretty evenly played game. ... We just, we wanted it a little more. We just were beating them to the ball a little more.”

EG junior Marielle Kraft had a strong game, with two goals.

“Marielle Kraft has been coming in off the bench, a secret weapon technique we call it,” said McMullen. “She comes off the bench and it ignites our offense.”

Moses Brown scored first, on a goal from Casey Quinn on an assist by Erin Mullins, halfway into the first half. Kraft tied it up before the half, on an assist by Jamie Fugere. In the second half, Kraft scored again, with an assist from Katie Sloat.

Caroline Neupauer scored the third goal for EG.

“Our put away - kind of safety insurance goal - was off a corner,” said McMullen. “It was beautifully set up. Caroline Neupauer hits it out, to Jamie Fugere. Jamie Fugere goes back to Caroline and Caroline shot it right in.”

McMullen also praised goalie Allie Leveillee, who had 11 saves.

Team co-captian senior Katie Sloat said the game was “awesome” and that the team really maintained its composure.

“Even in the end when they were getting desperate and committing a lot of fouls, we maintained composure and kept playing our game,” she said. “Julia Elson and Phoebe Hughes each had a crazy goal line save and our entire defensive team did an awesome job holding them off. It was just a really great game.”

“The refs were very tight on all calls today,” said Kraft. Both teams got green cards then Moses Brown got three yellow cards and EG got a one yellow.

“It was a hard fought battle but EG came out on top and now we are going to the finals!” Kraft said.
