Methodist Church Stop on Canadian Girls’ Choir Tour

Eclectic music from Canada, tennis in Newport, antique auto show in South County, and more.

Is it July already? If you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the long holiday weekend, Patch is coming to the rescue with the best bets for how to spend your free time. Check out our picks for the local activities to hit and places to explore.

A little bit of Canada is coming to East Greenwich this weekend when the First Baptist Girls’ Choir from Nova Scotia makes a stop here this weekend as part of its eastern United States tour.

The non-denominational choir is comprised of 24 young women whose ages range from 12-18 from Truro, Nova Scotia and its surrounding areas. Throughout its 26-year history, it has contributed regularly to the worship services of the First Baptist Church in Truro, in addition to recording, touring and performing in concerts worldwide.

Since its founding, the choir has received invitations to perform from many parts of the world, including Montreal and elsewhere throughout Canada, England, Wales, the United States, the Netherlands, Iceland, Finland, Germany and The Czech Republic.

Why Go: With the girls performing sacred, secular, traditional and contemporary music, mixed with Canadian folk songs, spirituals and gospel songs, there’s something for everyone.

Where/When: International Tennis Hall of Fame, 194 Bellevue Ave., Newport, RI 02840; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Why Go: So, you didn’t make it to Wimbledon. Lucky for us, the International Tennis Hall of Fame is located right here in Rhode Island, and there are pro tennis players from around the world gathering here this weekend. The family-friendly activities are a great reason to go, too.

Pricing: Adults $11; Children $5

Where/When: 17 Matunuck Beach Rd., South Kingstown, RI 02879; Sunday, 12 to 4 p.m.

Why Go: In addition to getting to check out the old-timie cars, the event features food, music from the Perryville Country Band, a silent auction, an arts and crafts marketplace, hay wagon rides, a petting zoo, and various exhibits. You’re also able to vote for your favorite antique vehicle for the People's Choice Award and see RI's own cartoonist, Don Bousquet, choose his personal favorite. USN Commander Robert Flynn, author of "The Lucky Blue Angel," an illustrated children's storybook for ages 3 through 9, will be on hand to read his book and sign autographs.

Pricing: $10 for antique vehicle registration; donations to benefit South County non-profit organizations welcome.

Why Go: We have our own little weekly classic and muscle car show happening in town this and every Friday through the summer.

Pricing: Free

5. PARKS & RECREATION DEPARTMENT

Where/When: ; Friday, 1:30 to 2:15 p.m.

Why Go: The kids need something to do, too. Keep them busy and entertained, at least for 45 minutes on Friday afternoons, this summer. This week, it’s the Pumpernickle Puppets who’ll be delighting kids ages 3-12.

Pricing: Free

Whether you’ve got a spot staked out for the Bristol 4th of July Parade, or watching fireworks displays from around the state close to home at Sandy Point Beach, be safe and enjoy celebrating our nation’s 235th birthday on Monday!
