No Rain, Plenty Of Runners, For ALS 5K

The annual run/walk at Goddard Park attracted nearly 700 participants.

The sun wasn't shining, but no one minded at Saturday's Scott Carlson/ALS 5K at Goddard Park. That's because rain had been in the forecast and many remembered last year's cold rain. Nearly 700 people registered by the start of the race.

The top three finishers as well as the top female finisher were from Connecticut. The winner of the race was William Sanders, from Wethersfield, Conn., with a time of 15:04.4. Marie Davenport of Guilford, Conn., was the first female finisher, with a time of 17:07.2.

"We had an awesome day," said race organizer Judy Pratt from EG Rotary. She said it was looking possible that they raised close to $60,000 for the ALS Association of Rhode Island.

She lauded the "tons of volunteers" from EG High School Interact club, the new Rotaract club at New England Tech, Rocky Hill School, and EG Rotary members.

"We couldn’t do the race without our amazing volunteers – and the support of our local community," said Pratt.
