Obituary: Mary E. Poncin, 101, Credited Long Life to Hard Work, Proper Food and Clean Living

Mary E. Poncin, 101, of East Greenwich, passed away Oct. 5. She was active in politics in Los Angeles before moving to Rhode Island in 1992.

Mary E. Poncin, 101, of East Greenwich, passed away October 5, 2015. She was the wife of the late Richard Poncin.

Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Immaculata (DelCostello) Vanti. Mrs. Poncin believed her longevity was due to hard work, proper food and clean living. She loved to work and had worked up until 2 weeks before her death. Her work had included being a greeter at Kent Hospital.

She had formerly lived in California from 1959 until 1992, where she was involved in local politics. She received many awards from the Mayor of Los Angeles and the LA City Council. She started and served as President of the Sun Valley Home Owners Association, where she lived. She enjoyed her time in the limelight participating on the former comedy show, Rhode Bytes.

She is survived by her children Carole A. Kennedy and Raymond J. Poncin, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Patrick Margadonna and 8 siblings. Mrs. Poncin generously donated her body to Tufts Medical School.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 8th at 5:00PM at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich.

Visitation will be prior to the service from 3:00PM to 5:00PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Ocean State Theatre Company Summer Program for Children, 1245 Jefferson Blvd., Warwick, RI 02886 or London Bridge Learning Center, 165 Duke St., East Greenwich, RI 02818.
