The Savory Affair Offers Unique Ideas for Making the Mother of the Bride or Groom Feel Special on the Big Day

With Mother’s Day just around the corner, The Savory Affair, Rhode Island’s premier event planning and design company, encouraged future brides and grooms to consider making mom feel loved and included on their special day.

“A wedding can be a very emotional event for the mother of the bride or groom, because it symbolizes an official cutting of the apron strings,” stated Jessica Granatiero, owner of The Savory Affair.  “Making a genuine effort to include both moms in the celebration represents the continued role each will play in the next chapter of their children’s lives.”

Ideas include:

1.       Incorporate the Bride’s Mother’s wedding dress into the day.  The Bride could choose to actually wear her mother’s dress, have it re-created with her mother’s dress material, or have a piece of it sewn into the under part her new dress with initials the date of her parents’ wedding embroidered into it.

2.       For the bride, ask your mother to be your “Matron of Honor” and have her stand alongside you and your bridesmaids during the ceremony.  Or ask your mother to walk you down the aisle with your father or other special person who is walking you down the aisle.

3.       Have your “Something Borrowed” be something of your mom’s, such as a special brooch, handkerchief, hair pieces, veil or jewelry.

4.       Have a special or personally significant song for each mom played during your ceremony when she is being walked down the aisle or escorted to her seat.  Have it noted in the program as a “Thank You, Mom” or “Because I Love You, Mom” song.

5.       Create a pretty sign for mother seating at your ceremony and reception, it could either be a tent card or a hanging sign reading “Reserved for Mother of the Bride” or “Reserved for Mother of the Groom”.

6.       Invite each mother to do a reading at your wedding on the topic of unconditional love or nurturing.

7.       “Last Kiss” – Right before the bride & groom kiss, the mothers of each are invited up so that “the first people to kiss them would be the last people to kiss them as single people.”

8.       Give each Mother a special gift on the day of your wedding to show her how much you appreciate her support and/or assistance, such as a pretty handkerchief embroidered with her name, the date of your wedding, and a short, meaningful poem.

9.       For the bride, do a fun Mother/Daughter dance before or following the Father/Daughter dance (if applicable).

10.   Toast each other’s mothers at your wedding reception as an honor and thank you.

“These are just a few, small ways to incorporate the moms into the wedding day that can make a big impact on their experience,” continued Granatiero. “Most of these can be done easily and within budget.”

Often with wedding planning, there can also be quite a bit of tension between the bride and her mother in making event and cost decisions.  The Savory Affair reminded couples that hiring an event planner can be a great way to have a neutral party offer compromising ideas and keep things on track.

Ultimately, regarding the mothers participation before, during and after the wedding, Granatiero reminded brides and grooms of one major thing to keep in mind while planning your wedding.

“Regardless of any ups and downs in your relationship with your mothers, you have to keep in mind that without them, you wouldn’t have each other.”
