The Week In Sports

Although the EGHS Avengers had the week off for April break, the spring teams were still busy playing in games and practicing last week

Thanks to April vacation the Avenger student athletes did not have to worry about school work last week but still were focused on their spring sports. Every spring sport program was busy over break.

The varsity baseball team spent the majority of the vacation practicing hard but also played in three league matchups against Narragansett, North Kingstown and Middletown. They started off strong on Monday against Narragansett with a 15-3  win over the Mariners.

The next day the Avengers battled divisional rival, the NK Skippers, but lost that one on a heartbreaking walk-off grand slam by Jared Habershaw. On Thursday, EG bounced back at home against Middletown winning 14-7 thanks to a nine-run fifth inning. Chris Pogue earned the win on the mound and catcher Scott Cullinane had four hits and four runs batted in to lead the Avengers. The baseball team is off to a strong 5-1 start in Division-1-South.

The varsity fastpitch softball team was undefeated during vacation with two league victories over Exeter/West Greenwich and North Providence. The win over EWG on Monday  was due in large part to a six-run bottom of the fifth inning where Kyra Benavent nailed a bases-loaded triple. After their 7-3 over the Scarlet Knights the Avengers faced off against North Providence on Wednesday. Mollie Anderson pitched a complete game shutout and Lauren Duvall hit a homer en route to a 9-0 victory in Division-2-Central. The Avenger softball squad is off to a 6-1 start to the season.

The boys varsity lacrosse team played two games over vacation, one non-league matchup vs. Rocky Hill and a divisional matchup against divisional rival Cumberland. EG slipped by Rocky Hill in a high scoring game, winning 14-12. Ethan Zink shined in the game with eight goals and one assist to lead the Avengers. On Thursday EG traveled to play the Cumberland Clippers and lost a close one, 7-6. Despite the close loss, Lucas Stralka and Ethan Zink each chipped in two goals and Kyle Carosotto added three assists and one goal. The boys lacrosse team is off to a 4-3 record.

The girls varsity lacrosse team was also busy during April break, mostly with practices each morning but they also played their rival South Kingstown on Tuesday. The Avengers came out on top in the Division-1-South matchup over SK, edging the Rebels by a score of 17-15. Kiley Powers led the Avengers in scoring with seven goals and three assists. Megan Greineder added four goals and two assists, Marielle Kraft had three goals, and Andie Coutalakis had 12 saves. The girls lacrosse team is off to an undefeated start on the season.

The boys varsity volleyball team played two league games over break, both at home. The first match on Tuesday night, the Avengers played the Tollgate Titans and swept them winning every set. On Thursday EG was at home against the undefeated Cranston West Falcons. The Avengers dominated the first set winning 25-18. Then the Falcons bounced back winning the next three sets to remain undefeated on the year. On the loss Dan Shawver had 19 kills. The volleyball team is off to a 4-2 start in Division-2-South.

The boys varsity tennis team played in two matches over break. The first one on Wednesday the Avengers traveled to play Providence Country Day and despite EG's one and two single players losing, the Avengers won the rest of their sets to beat PCD 5 to 2. Going into the Friday match against Ponaganset, both teams were undefeated in Division-2. The Avengers dominated their rival with a 6-1 victory to remain the only undefeated team left in the division.

Both boys and girls outdoor track teams did not have any meets but still practiced hard throughout vacation to prepare for their next upcoming meet today (4/25) at Curtis Corner Middle School. The golf team also has its first match today against Cranston East and West Warwick.
