Congratulations to the EG Unified Basketball team for its second win in a row! It was a "nail-biter" at the finish.
EG took a comfortable lead into halftime on the strength of some good defense (led by Emily Swanson) and converting its fast-break opportunities.
The second half saw Coventry use its own running game to beat EG down the court and score a number of uncontested layups, eventually tying the score at 30 apiece. With time running down, EG and Coventry traded a couple of baskets, and the score again was tied at 34. EG's defense held and we rebounded the ball with less than 30 seconds remaining. We shot, missed, rebounded — shot, missed again, and rebounded again — with less than 5 seconds remaining, Liam Shaughnessey scored to give EG a 36-34 lead, which ended up being the final score.
Once again, all our athletes scored. Emily lead the way with 12 points, with Tyler Burke and Liam each adding 8 points. Mike Padula was our leading rebounder with 7, and he also had a number of defensive takeaways. Team shooting was 25 percent, so this is one area where we hope to see improvement as our season continues. Next Wednesday (April 4) we will be at Hendricken!
