4 Ways to Safely Enjoy the Fourth of July

Personal Injury attorney Mike Bottaro discusses tips for staying safe while celebrating the holiday weekend.

July 4th is the yearly reminder that summer is officially underway here in Rhode Island. Here is a list of tips to help you stay safe while you enjoy the celebrations:

  1. Drive Safely:

If you plan on drinking while celebrating this holiday, designate a driver to take you home responsibly. If you do not have someone available to drive you, Yellow Pages has a list of available cab companies to ensure that you reach home without harm.

Set up outdoor grilling equipment at a safe distance from buildings, walkways, and flammable outdoor items. Keeping a fire extinguisher near the grill is an easy way to prevent flames from spreading if the burgers get too out of hand. For more information about grilling safety, visit the Hasbo Children’s Hospital website for detailed tips.

  • Boating and Swimming Precautions:

Boats will be in full swing this weekend and with the start of swim season it is especially important that our kids are safe. Confirming all boats are properly licensed and making sure that all kids are in properly fitting life vests can help ensure safety on the water.  If you do not know if the life vests you are using are the correct type and form for your age or size, the U.S. Coast Guard’s Division of Boasting Safety can help you confirm whether your jackets are the proper fit.

  •

  • Bicycle Safety:

  • With all the outdoor fun this holiday it is important both children and adults are properly protected while riding the roads. Always wear a helmet, and more importantly, make sure the straps are tight enough so that the helmet will properly protect your head in case of a fall.
