A Rumford Smash: Sunshine Creamery's Monster Mash

Patch brings you a look at East Providence's ice creameries in anticipation of National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 17.

Nestled between the intersection of North Broadway and Roger Williams Avenue, the bright yellow exterior of proves the company name is no misnomer.

Sunshine Creamery has become a Rumford staple in its 25 years of existence. Owned by Marty Leyden of Cranston and his family, the store boasts almost 50 flavors of ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet. The creamery also constantly adds new items to its menu. The newest flavor is called Graham Central Station, a graham cracker-like ice cream with chocolate honeycomb crisps.

But the most popular flavor at Sunshine Creamery by far is the Monster Mash. Delivered to the creamery by local dairies, the flavor is also unique.

"It's a vanilla-based ice cream containing malted milk balls, crushed Oreo cookies, and a delicious caramel swirl," Sunshine Creamery supervisor Ryan Rodrigues explained.

The Monster Mash and other flavors draw a sizable crowd to the creamery daily.

"Business has been especially good this summer considering the weather," Rodrigues said.
