Johnston Man Defaced Patriotic East Providence Crosswalk With Tire Tracks: Cops

The American flag-themed crosswalk was newly painted on the Memorial Day parade route.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — A Johnston man was arrested and pleaded no contest to defacing a patriotic East Providence crosswalk with tire tracks, police said.

David Cafaro, 32, took the pleaded no contest to vandalism/malicious injury to property and was sentenced to a year probation and ordered to pay restitution to the city and enter drug counseling, the police department said in a social media post.

The vandalism to the "newly painted American flag-themed crosswalk on Turner Avenue along the Memorial Day parade route" was discovered Saturday morning, according to the post.

"Officers responded early Saturday morning after reports that a black BMW intentionally accelerated through the freshly painted crosswalk, leaving two long tire marks across the artwork just one day after it was completed in honor of Memorial Day," the post said.

Cafaro was identified as the driver through surveillance footage, license plate-reading cameras and "resident cooperation," according to the release.

"This marks the third arrest made by the East Providence Police Department involving the defacing or vandalism of a ceremonial painted crosswalk in our city in recent years," the release said. "Anyone responsible for damaging city property will be identified, arrested, and charged accordingly."
