Bay View Academy Teams Qualify for First State Lego®Tourney

Students from Barrington, Bristol, Cranston, East Providence, Smithfield, Warren and Woonsocket were among those making the squads.

East Providence, RI – Bay View’s two robotics teams, S.M.A.R.T. on Nov. 19 went to the Gordon School to compete in the FIRST® Lego® League Qualifier Tournament.

According to Ann Swain, the school's publicist, both teams had red letter days.

"Not only did both teams successfully earn their spots at the State Championship, to be held on Jan. 14, at Roger Williams University, but both teams also took home additional prizes," she said.

"The S.M.A.R.T. squad won first place Project and first place Robot performance, while S.M.A.R.T 2.0 took second place Champions and second place Robot game."

The Robowolves, from Jamestown, won the Champions Award.

"Going forward, the S.M.A.R.T. girls, under the direction of their teacher and coach, Linda Grasso, of Exeter, will be examining the rubrics they received from the competition and working on improving for the state competition on January," she said.

One thing's for sure. Robotics is at Bay View to stay.

"The interest in Bay View’s robotics program has been such that the Academy added another Middle School team this semester, S.M.A.R.T 2.0," she said. "Additionally, Bee S.M.A.R.T Jr., kicked off this fall, adding a third grade after school robotics program at Bay View, as part of FIRST® Lego® League, Jr."
