BAY VIEW ACADEMY UPPER SCHOOL STUDENTS HONORED FOR EXCELLENCE IN MATHEMATICS AND ENGLISH
East Providence, RI – Bay View Academy recently celebrated excellence in and the commitment to the study of mathematics and English with an induction and membership renewal ceremony for two Bay View honor societies: Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society and the Catherine McAuley Chapter of the National English Honor Society (NEHS). The ceremonies took place during a Lenten liturgy at Bay View on March 11th.
Forty-four students were inducted into or renewed their membership with the Catherine McAuley Chapter of the National English Honor Society. Admission into this honor society is based on rigorous criteria. Students must have maintained an A- average in their English courses for two consecutive years. If a student has been enrolled in an AP English class, her average can be no lower than a B+. In addition, the student cannot have a grade lower than a C in any other course. When a student has not maintained the required academic standing, she may also be considered for membership if she has won local, regional, or national awards for creative writing.
Bay View’s Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society was the first of its kind in Rhode Island. Formed in 1957, the purpose of this organization is to stimulate interest in mathematics by providing public recognition of superior mathematical activities. Students must complete two years of math at the honors level with a minimum average of 90 and maintain that average to become a member. This year, twenty-seven students were inducted into or renewed their membership with Mu Alpha Theta.
