Brains On Display At Bay View
Students rolled up their sleeves and learned about how the brain works.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI - From St. Mary Academy - Bay View: On March 5th, Victoria Heimer-McGinn, (Pawtucket, RI), Brown University Postdoctoral Fellow in Neuroscience, co-chair of Brain Week Rhode Island, and also a Bay View mom, brought her traveling presentation on the human brain to St. Mary Academy - Bay View.
Bay View students from Pre-K through grade 12 had the opportunity to visit four different hands-on stations including: the preserved human brain experience, a myth busters table, an all about the eye table, and an optical illusions table where students learned about how the brain plays tricks on our eyes and makes us perceive things differently.
Dr. Heimer-McGinn says the purpose of Brain Week RI is to inspire the next generation of brain scientists and to make research about the brain more accessible to Rhode Islanders. She adds that there is currently an underrepresentation of women neuroscientists and neurologists, and hopes the students at Bay View, an all-girls school, will be inspired and confident that they too can become brain scientists.
