She was married to Edmund J. Clegg Jr. of East Providence for 61 years.

Claire (Messinger) Clegg of East Providence died on Jan. 8, 2012. She was the wife of Edmund J. Clegg Jr., for 61 years.
Born in East Providence, she was the daughter of the late R. Leonard Messinger and Charlotte (Fuller) Messinger Hazard. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Russell G. Messinger.
Clegg was a 1948 graduate of Bryant College and later taught in the Warwick School system. She was past president of Sigma Iota Chi Sorority at Bryant, the Rumford Junior Women's Club and the Goff Gathering Assoc.

She was a former Girl Scout troop leader and a 1976 RI Bicentennial Committee member. Her talents included needlework and painting and she was an avid collector of antiques.
Besides her husband, she leaves her daughters and their husbands, Sandra G. Nash, Temecula, CA, Deborah C. Stein, (Michael), Seattle, WA, Cynthia C. Merkle, (Philip), Swampscott, MA, and Pamela C. Marquez, (Antonio), Rockville, MD; grandchildren, Jason, Nash and Jessica G. PeÑa, Katherine, Elizabeth and David Stein, Hana and Sarah Merkle, and Alexander and Nicole Marquez. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10 am in St. Martha's Church, Pawtucket Avenue., East Providence. Calling hours are Friday from 5 to 8 pm in the J. H. Williams & Co. Funeral Home, 210 Taunton Ave., East Providence.
Burial will follow in the Rehoboth Cemetery, Rehoboth, Mass. In Lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Ctr., 1085 N. Main St., Providence, RI 02904.
