Confederate Flag Noticed & Then Removed From DOT Garage

During an event Friday, a WPRO-AM radio reporter saw the flag inside a state Department of Transportation garage in East Providence.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI—A Confederate flag was hanging on a wall inside a state garage, operated by the Department of Transportation, but it was removed Friday after a radio reporter noticed it and tweeted a photograph.

According to Lisbeth Pettengill, spokeswoman for RI DOT, "the flag was noticed during an event at the facility. It was removed immediately. We have referred this matter to Human Resources who will take appropriate steps."

The reporters, along with state police Col. Ann Assumpico and Peter Alviti, director of DOT, were at the garage for a press conference about Work Zone Safety Week.
