Coronavirus: East Providence Smoke Detector Inspection Alert

East Providence has issued the following contingency plans for smoke detector inspections during the coronavirus pandemic.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — East Providence has instituted the following contingencies for smoke detector and carbon monoxide detecor inspections amid the coronavirus pandemic. The options are being made available under the guidance of the State of Rhode Island Fire Safety Code — Board of Appeal and Review.

Residents and businesses requiring a detector inspection have two options.

Option 1: You may submit a video of the working smoke detectors to tsalisbury@eastprovfire.com. Please use the following guidance: The video must be on YouTube and a link must be provided. The video needs to show the house from the outside and be continuous for the length of the inspection. The home address needs to be clearly visible and all detectors need to be shown being tested. Bedrooms with the corresponding detectors need to be visible. Homes built after 1976 have to show that detectors are interconnected. Please show each detector close-up so the age can be determined.

You are not required to video an occupied residence. You may use the second option of establishing an escrow account. Officials advise to please be safe in all methods of inspection.

Option 2: The City of East Providence will be accepting evidence of an established escrow account in the amount of $150 payable to the buyer as a temporary measure to delay the required smoke detector inspection. The inspection shall be performed at a later date and within 60 days of the termination of the state of emergency. An unsigned certificate will be issued upon proof of the escrow account. A copy of the unsigned certificate will be kept on file. After the successful completion of the inspection, a signed certificate will be issued.
