East Providence Accident Victim Dies: Police Make Arrest

An East Providence woman was killed Monday night by a hit and run driver. Police have arrested a suspect.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI— The woman struck by a car on Newport Avenue has died, police said. She was an East Providence resident in her 40's. Her name is not being released pending family notifications. According to police, the accident happened around 7:53 p.m. on Newport Avenue near the intersection of Roger Williams Avenue. Witnesses told police a red SUV had hit a pedestrian and sped away.

Police found the victim unconscious. Medics gave her first aid and took her to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

During the accident investigation, police located a witness who had seen the SUV's registration number. Police traced it to a car rental company. The SUV had been returned, and the suspect had rented a replacement. He turned himself into police after officers contacted him.

The suspect is identified as Paul Newman, age 53, of Jacksonville, Florida and he will be arraigned in 6th District Court at 9 a.m. on the charge of Leaving the Scene of an Accident Death Resulting, police said.
