Updated: East Providence Firefighters Respond to Commercial Building Fire

Firefighters put out a fire in duct work at Crelin Handling Equipment.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI—An alarm sounded around 3:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon for a one-story cinder block commercial building on Commercial Way. The business, which manufactures forklifts and other equipment, was vacant and undergoing demolition, according to Battalion Chief David Rave.

"They were taking apart duct work," which had been used in some type of painting operation, and the duct work and debris inside it caught fire, due to the way it was being cut, he said.

The duct work extended all the way to the roof, so the fire went up through the roof. The fire department had to lay two hose lines inside the structure and one additional line for the roof. The rubber roof caused some problems because it became slippery due to the water.
