East Providence Mayor Shares Vision For Grassy Plains Park

East Providence Major Bob DaSilva looks to clear up "misinformation" about plans for neglected park.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — East Providence Mayor Bob DaSilva is looking to clear up what he calls "misinformation" about the city's plans for Grassy Plains Park. Mayor DaSilva took to social media to dispel reports that the city is looking to turn the 225-acre park into a "soccer complex."

"What we would like to do is replace the baseball field with an open field that could be used for soccer, lacrosse or football," Mayor DaSilva posted on his Facebook account. "One open field for all to enjoy. We would like to make improvements to walking trails, and other amenities. I would like to make this a park that all people from Riverside and from East Providence can enjoy. Parks bring value to a community and bring people together. They bring value to your property."

Mayor DaSilva said neighbors have been fed the misformation in an attempt to get them to oppose the renovations. He said he wants the park, which once had a baseball field, basketball courts and tennis courts, restored after years of being neglected and abandoned. Mayor DaSilva said the city has applied to the RI Department of Environmental Management for a grant to help with improvements.

"This land was not only meant to be used by the immediate abutting neighbors who use it as their own personal dog park," Mayor DaSilva said. "This is a city park. Families with small children should be comfortable coming to their park and enjoying it like anyone else."
