East Providence Police Issue Tips On 'Aggressive Panhandling'
East Providence advise not engaging aggressive panhandlers and calling EPD if you feel intimidated or unsafe.
EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — A spike in what East Providence police are calling "aggressive panhandling" in the area has spurred EPPD to issue pointers on how to deal with a person trying to intimidate you into giving them money. If you do want to help a panhandler, EPPD suggests buying the person something to eat or drink in lieu of giving someone money on the street or in a parking lot.
EPPD said recent cases of aggressive panhandling include panhandlers following people, being loud and demanding money.
Those who experience aggressive panhandling are advised not to engage the panhandler in conversation, to keep walking and stay aware of your surroundings. If the incident occurs in or near a business, tell the business owner what is happening so they can call police and file a no-trespass complaint.
