EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The East Providence police department is mourning the loss of a dispatcher who served the city for 34 years. East Providence police posted on social media on Friday that Michael Walsh succumbed to a lengthy illness.

"To say Mike was a dedicated, hard working dispatcher is truly an understatement," East Providence police posted on their Facebook page. "He always went above and beyond — Mike had it done before a cop even asked. It was comforting to hear Mike's calming voice in the most stressful situations. He always had the information we needed or knew exactly how to get it. The knowledge he passed on to his co-workers over 34 years is immeasurable."

In three days since the post, the remembrance received 134 comments of love, support and condolences as of Monday afternoon.
