EAST PROVIDENCE, RI — The East Providence Police Department is asking the community to keep one of its officers in their thoughts. Detective Jose Taveira is battling a serious illness, the department said in a release on Friday.

Taveira has been a veteran of the department for more than two decades, specializing in helping victims of financial crimes.

"He has prided himself on getting justice for those who were victims of fraud, especially the elderly," the release read in part. "He was most proud of his work when he was able to recover funds for those victims."

Taveira's daughter and long-time fiancee have been by his side throughout his illness, and the department said that all thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

A golf tournament to benefit the detective will be held on Dept. 24 at Agawam Hunt. Anyone interested in getting involved or donating is encouraged to reach out to the department's detective division throughout the weekend. Checks can be made out to the EPPD Detectives Charity and sent to the station.
