UPDATE: Riverside Library is NOT a Shelter

East Providence Senior Center is the city's only shelter.

Update: East Providence assistant emergency management director Wayne Barnes announced Saturday morning that the Riverside Library will not be an emergency shelter during Hurricane Irene. The only approved shelter is at the , and it will open at 4 pm Saturday.

East Providence High School is normally the designated emergency shelter; however, due to construction work on the air conditioning systems, the space can't hold residents, according to East Providence police.

"East Providence High School is a larger building, but due to renovations, it can't be used," Police Major Charles Swenson said.

According to Major Swenson, the military donated a generator to power the senior center.

The department is preparing for the storm by adding extra officers to shifts. They are also double checking vehicular equipment.

According to Major Swenson, there are no plans to evacuate areas of East Providence at the moment. The decision will come down from the governor's office should the time come.
