Elderly Evacuated from City View Manor Apartments

Workers accidentally turned on a stove that had a television resting upon a burner.

About 30 elderly residents living in  were evacuated from their apartments after a portable television left on a kitchen stove close to 9 a.m. Thursday morning.

Inhabitants living on the 10th and 11th floors were moved to the eighth floor to avoid smoke inhalation, according to Captain Oscar Elmasian. Medical teams were stationed there to assess potential health complications.

"It was an isolated fire," he said. "There was a lot of smoke."

There were no injuries related to the fire, though one person was transported to Rhode Island Hospital due to the commotion, said Fire Chief Joseph Klucznik.

The fire was inadvertently caused by workers cleaning out the apartment. No one is living in the premises; renovations are planned for the space.
