EP Police Identify Pedestrian In Monday's Fatal Hit And Run
The victim is Maria Raposo, 46, of East Providence, police said.

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI— Police have identified the pedestrian struck and killed by a car on Newport Avenue on Monday. Maria Raposo, 46, died at Rhode Island Hospital, according to police Lt. Thomas Rush. The accident happened around 7:53 p.m. near the intersection of Roger Williams Avenue. Witnesses told police a red SUV had hit a pedestrian and sped away.
Police found the victim unconscious. Medics gave her first aid and took her to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
During the accident investigation, police located a witness who had seen the SUV's registration number. Police traced it to a car rental company. The SUV had been returned, and the suspect had rented a replacement. He turned himself into police after officers contacted him.

The suspect is identified as Paul Newman, age 53, of Jacksonville, Florida. He was arraigned in Sixth District Court Tuesday and charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Death Resulting, police said.
