UPDATED: Fire Damages Apartments at Evergreen Drive
East Providence firefighters worked on the roof to get at flames and smoke from a two-alarm fire at 15 Evergreen, an apartment complex.
Four adults and one child have been displaced from their homes after an apartment complex at 15 Evergreen Drive caught fire due to a cooking mishap, according to reports from the .
According to Capt. Oscar Elmasian, the residents will be put up in a temporary shelter. He is hopeful they can be moved to vacant apartments in the complex.
The American Red Cross was on scene to assist.

"It could have become a major fire. [Firefighters] stopped it before it got into the attic," Elmasian said, noting that if the blaze had traveled that far, the entire complex would have been unsalvageable. A hole was cut into the roof to stop the fire.
One firefighter was taken to Rhode Island Hospital after suffering from dehydration, said Fire Chief Joseph Klucznik. He was released later in the day.
